Tips and Tricks to be a faster simracer #14 – Force Feed Back

Set the correct Force Feed Back settings

Always make sure you have set the correct Force Feed Back (FFB) settings. If they are set too high you will be clipping. Clipping is when the FFB sends no detailed information on the wheel because it is hitting a maximum threshold. In some sims it is possible to enable a plugin that will visualize any clipping. If the FFB is set too little you will also have less feeling on what is happening wich will also result in problems controlling the car.

Search the internet for guides for your wheel and game.

If  you are able to finetune these settings you will get faster and more consistent.

Tips and Tricks to be a faster simracer #13 – Slow in, fast out

Slow in, fast out

Typically new racers or novice racers that get to a new track are eager to get that super fast lap in from the start.

Just remember faster is not always giving you a faster lap.

Especially while cornering. Slow in, fast out is the trick. Start your first laps with a lower corner turn in speed. And try to go out faster instead.

Most of the time you overdue while entering the corner, wich will result in missing apex or going wide on the exit because of all the understeer you experience.

For example, start with the porsche. That car will teach you from the start that entering the corner will have to be slower then any other car.

Tips and Tricks to be a faster simracer #12 – Commit the throttle

Commit to your throttle

What regulary happens is that people are not commited to the throttle. For example; when you enter a corner all the way down to apex and into applying more power again exiting the turn a lot of simracers are releasing the throttle slightly, coasting, and get back into more throttle again.

This teaches us that you are not using the right corner speed, applying too much throttle on the exit or using a wrong setup. If you apply throttle exiting a turn you keep it. If you do release and re-apply you may upset the cars behaviour. The body may want to roll and the dampers may rebound again.

So make sure you are committed with the throttle!

Have you ever seen the A-TEAM? Who is driving the car? Yes it is B.A.

Go watch youtube and see how he drives a car. It is insane. The steering input B.A. gives while driving the car is too much. Even on the straights he is putting a lot corrections to the cars steering.

In simracing you will have to try to steer as less as possibly needed. So when exiting a corner, let the wheel move to its neutral position instead of putting force on the wheel so that it can not turn fast enough to its neutral position.

Also when cornering try to steer in one line instead of making corrections while turning. This will make the car more stable.

To be consistent in the long run you need to focus on one goal at a time. So don't do some hotlapping with a few liters fuel and after 10 minutes start on doing a long stint. Stick to one plan at a time. Actually before you start doing hotlaps make sure you can do at least 10 to 15 rounds in one row to get to learn your car and the pace you can do without making mistakes. Your laptimes should be within a few tenths of a second. After you reached your goal in consistency on the long run continue to the hotlapping. Most people also got different setups for the race as for the qualify practice.

Driving with assists seems the way to go when simracing. That is actually not the case. Make sure you turn off stuff like brake and steer assists.

Also try to learn a track with the ideal line disabled. Or if you are not known with racing at all try to turn it off as soon as possible.

What you should not disable are the traction control and abs. These two are specific setup settings and make a big difference on the cars handling.

Invest in hardware! Simracing is about speed right? So if you are driving fast but the images build up slow that is not really how we want it right? So just like in a lot of first person shooters, you want get your FPS (Frames Per Second) as high as possible. The more frames, the better the feeling while racing. Also if the frames are to low in for example a VR (Virtual Reality) setup you can get dizzy while playing your game.

Unfortunately hardware costs money, so more fps will cost you more money. If you do not want to spend that extra money you could also choose to lower your detail ingame to get that extra frame.

Alternatively you could choose for the console instead of the pc to play your game. The game developers will make you get the best out of the game on your type of console hardware.

So in a nutshell.. FPS is king!

Use the proper gear. Do not use a joypad or even joysticks. Play with a wheel. There are racers out there who are even fast with cheap wheelbases but the more expensive wheelbases like Fanatec providers often give a better feedback and also channel the forces better.

If you invest in a cheap wheelbase and want to upgrade to something in the future replacing the pedals would be a good choice. Especially pedals with a loadcell.

But not only a proper wheel will make you faster, also the right seat position. So try to create a place that you do not have to disassemble all the time. Get the right seating position or eventually buy or create your own rig.

There is a trick to be a faster player. Be slow!

So first of all, learn your track. See how a corner flows, is it a fast corner or a slow corner, where is the straight? Is there a corner exit that needs speed? Examine everything and build your speed up slowly. Make sure to hit every apex before running a fast laptime.

The word Simracer got "Sim" in it. So choose a sim and not an arcade racer. Games like Project Cars and Need for Speed might look cool in graphic terms. But that is not what a real sim game needs. I'd recommend to get started with games like Assetto Corsa, Assetto Corsa Competizione, rFactor2 and if you got too much money to spare, choose iRacing.

I'd rather also suggest, play the game on a PC and not on the console. Some games got released on both platforms but the physics are different.

Good look finding your sim!
